What do you like to do with your time?
Maybe go for coffee with friends, try a new restaurant, or go and see a film? That’s your third place. A special place that exists alongside your home and your work life, acting as the core of community life where we can connect with each other.
It could be your local pub, where you feel known and familiar, a space that hosts community classes, or even public places like the beach.
In 2015/16, I was researching the consumer motivations for choosing a coffee shop in Brighton as my dissertation project. I came across this theory and it just resonated with me instantly. It explained why I felt so strongly about things like finding the right coffee shop environment for myself, as well as those I spend time with.
What we’d define as a third place is unique to all of us and our motives for choosing the places we hang out are very different – often changing to fit our needs at the time.
With this in mind, I decided to combine my love of dining and café culture with the concept of the third place to review different spots around Brighton, Hove and Sussex.
The Third Place doesn’t contain food reviews in the traditional sense of most food blogs – mostly because I feel like I’m certainly not enough of an expert to do that! It’s about what might make something a third place. So here, you’ll find everything from coffee shops, brunch spots and Brighton restaurants, to pop-ups, fast food, food festivals and travel destinations.
